Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) Production

Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) is an odorless and tasteless crystalline powder naturally derived from cellulosic biomass, used as a texturizer, an anti-caking agent, a fat substitute, an emulsifier, an extender, and a base material in functional foods, ideal for health food additives. MCC can also be utilized as excipients and disintegrating agents in the pharmaceutical industry.

MCC requires breaking long cellulose chains to isolate short (micro), highly ordered (crystalline) segments of cellulose, with desired properties such as:

  • Fibre-rich

  • Edible/chewable

  • Biodegradable

  • Water insoluble

  • Chemically resistant

  • Non-toxic

SciencePak MCC Production provides multiple opportunity benefits including:

Lower energy requirement – Post-processing occurs at lower temperatures require less energy input than comparable processes

Improved health and safety – Conditions of post-processing display advantages in terms of health and safety in comparison to existing MCC manufacturing processes

Potential for chemical recyclability – All chemicals used in the post-processing show potential to be recycled to reduce process waste and improve environmental footprint

Canadian – All processing in Canada using Canadian biomass; providing jobs, and local availability during global supply disruptions

Potential to utilize a diverse array of feedstocks – The post-processing has been used to date in 2 different woody biomass feedstocks and shows potential to be used with different agricultural waste products including wheat straw, hemp, bamboo, etc.

Our products are utilized in a variety of industry applications.
